Candida albicans is a type of yeast, within the fungi family, which requires another living organism (or host) in order for it to survive.

Candida establishes microscopic colonies which appear white in color and when colonies grow large enough, can be seen with the naked eye in various parts of the body. At this stage, it can be a sign of a Candida infection, or Candidiasis.
If Candida overgrowth is found in the mouth or throat, it is generally classified as Thrush. If found in or around the vagina or penis, it is more commonly classified as vaginitis or a yeast infection. Click here to learn about the various symptoms of yeast infection.
Candida albicans is found naturally within the intestinal flora and skin of a healthy human body. It is classified as a commensal, which means the the host organism (you), is typically not affected negatively by this relationship. However, if the immune system and intestinal flora of the host is compromised, Candida can begin to grow quickly and out of proportion to it's host. Usually, people only begin having various Candida related health problems when an overgrowth of Candida proliferates within the body.
Candida cells often make their homes within decaying fecal matter inside the intestinal tract and is often their primary source of food as well. One of the most important things to know about Candida albicans yeast is that it literally thrives on simple sugars. Any kind of sugar is essentially adding fuel to the fire. In taking the first steps to eliminating Candidiasis, eliminating sugar from the diet will be one of the most critical and effective steps you can take. |
